I’ll describe the methods for stimulating bone growth presently in use, and their indications. I’ll discuss the more important historical factors that led to the availability of bone-stimulation systems. The history provides a good insight into the interaction between scientific, medical, and business considerations in the development a new treatment. Lastly, I’ll briefly describe the outlook for the use of electrical stimulation in orthopaedics.
