My basic interest is in understanding biological systems. I’m going to describe evidence that seems to me clearly to indicate that biological systems are fundamentally nonlinear in nature. This being the case, I think that the physics of our fathers has only limited applicability for resolving the central problems of present-day biology. But even though the old idea that biology will be like physics when it grows up is wrong, the method of physics still has much to contribute to the solution of biological issues.
